Concrete Shot Blasting — Fast, Deep Substrate Preparation
Shot blasting is the fastest, highest-throughput method of preparing large concrete slabs for resin flooring — an enclosed steel-shot blast wheel throws thousands of steel spheres at the substrate, removing laitance, opening the surface pores and producing a deep, mechanical CSP 3–4 profile. F Wilding Ltd operates a fleet of enclosed shot-blasters nationwide.
What is shot blasting?
Enclosed steel-shot blasters (Blastrac / Wolff / Marcrist) throw graded steel shot at the substrate under vacuum, immediately recovering the shot and the dust it produces. The dust is separated from the shot, which is re-cycled continuously back into the blast wheel.
Where and when we use it
The prep method of choice for large open floors, heavy-duty PU screeds, DPMs, and any resin system needing a deep CSP. Not suitable for very small areas or corners (grinding takes over there).
Key benefits
What makes shot blasting the right prep method for the right job:
- Deep CSP 3–4 profile
- 400–800 m² per shift on open substrate
- Enclosed — captures shot & dust
- Minimal moisture (dry process)
- Ideal for heavy-duty PU / DPM installs
- Nationwide plant availability
Standalone or included in a resin flooring install
We carry out surface preparation as a standalone service for main contractors and other resin installers, and as a fully integrated phase of our own supply-and-install projects. Nationwide plant, direct labour, HEPA dust extraction and out-of-hours access as standard.
Frequently asked questions
Can shot blasting damage the slab?+
Correctly operated on sound concrete, no. Soft or friable slabs will show more surface loss — we check with a bond test and adjust the shot size / dwell.
Can you work around a live operation?+
Almost every project we run is on a working site. We phase installs by bay, aisle or zone, work nights and weekends where required, and specify fast-cure MMA or polyaspartic systems on jobs where a single continuous shutdown isn't possible.
Do you cover the whole UK?+
Yes. F Wilding Ltd is Essex-based but the majority of our contracts are outside the South East — London, the Midlands, the North West, Yorkshire, the North East, Wales, Scotland and the South West. Travel, accommodation and out-of-hours access are priced into every quote.
